Analogies

According to the text that I am reading by Marilyn Nippold on later language learning, children as young as  three are beginning to understand analogous relationships.  For example, Driver is to bus as pilot is to _______ (plane).  Especially if these analogies are presented as pictures, young kids can stretch their minds to develop analogical reasoning skills very early.

For those of us who have the relationship between drivers, buses, pilots and planes mastered, there are third-order analogies.  For example:

[sand : beach :: star : galexy] goes with which of the following...
a. [sand : minerals :: star : gas]
b. [water : ocean :: air : sky]
c. [turtle : beach :: rocket : galexy]
